REGATTA 2009 (Canoe Racing Competition)

The first ever Regatta (Canoe Racing Competition) attracted thousands of people who trooped to the Boat-Ase (New Takoradi) to observe and support their communities. Due to the fact that teenage pregnancy and school drop-out rate was high based on our research, the festive event created an ambience for the people who trooped to the event grounds, to be educated on the chosen theme “COMBATING TEENAGE PREGNANCY AND SCHOOL DROP-OUT” and the message was warmly welcomed by the communities with the opinion leaders pledging to actively sustain the campaign.

Due to the successfulness of REGATTA 2008, the second edition of this unique event has seen an increase of the participating communities from eight (8) to twelve (12) communities which will take place at the same venue (New Takoradi, Boat Ase), in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.

This event would be under the ROYAL PATRONAGE of NANA KOBINA NKETSIA IV

EVENT OVERVIEW

With 100 registered participants and estimated 5,000 spectators, we believe the Royal Regatta would be the largest on-shore party in Ghana.
The main event will be the Grand Challenge Cup (M8).
Each canoe will carry 8 participants forming the community team. The race will be run in batches of three with the winner selected for the final round.
The final race would therefore see four participating community teams with the winner being the first to breast the tape.

The Sports Council of Ghana would be the officiating referee.
There would be;

  • Coxed Fours (M8) i.e. Competition for smaller canoes each carrying four people.
  • Swimming Competition over 500meters.
  • Beach Wrestling.
  • Gari Competition
